Concept Engineering Design for the Tank Storage System

In LH2CRAFT project the aim of work package 3 is the development of the basic configuration of the membrane-type CCS selected in WP2, which involves evaluating the physical properties of each component material. Specific objectives encompass the concept design of the basic insulation unit structure, incorporating vacuum insulation panels and procedures for vacuuming insulation spaces. Additionally, a modular arrangement concept for unit insulation structures will be developed for easy control.

Furthermore, an evaluation which will include assessing mechanical properties, fatigue life, and compatibility of component materials within the LH2 cryogenic environment, in line with WP2 requirements will be conducted. Analytical and experimental assessments of alternative insulation systems are also underway, considering factors such as insulation performance, structural reliability, large capacity transportation efficiency, and workability.

The overarching goal of Task 3.1 led by HD-KSOE is to satisfy the requirements for the LH2 insulation system established in WP2, ensuring compliance with IMO regulations and the rules of Classification Societies in the development of the CCS. The fundamental structure of the insulation unit will include liquid and gas-tight barriers to prevent leakage, facilitating safe LH2 storage. It will also incorporate superior insulation materials to enhance transportation efficiency, along with fastening members securing barriers and insulation materials on the hull structure. Additionally, methods for forming and maintaining a vacuum environment in the insulation space will also be included, anticipated to enable stable operation of the insulation system and the detection of H2 leaks.
