LH2CRAFT Advances Circularity and Recycling Assessment for Liquid Hydrogen Storage

LH2CRAFT is exploring how its materials and equipment can be reused, repaired and recycled, with these considerations built into the design phase. Led by the University of Patras, Task 7.1 – Design-for-Recycling and Circularity of Materials and Equipment aims to identify design improvements that support the sustainable use of the prototype tank, small-size model tank, materials and HDMSS components, including beyond the project’s completion.

Work has progressed on establishing a methodological framework to assess the circularity and recyclability of LH2CRAFT materials and equipment. The framework follows circular economy principles and relevant ISO 59000 standards.

An initial assessment of the membrane tank configuration has also been conducted. This includes identifying its materials, examining their potential for recycling and exploring possible pathways for managing them at the end of their use.

Ongoing work focuses on how components can be disassembled, how materials can be recovered, and where opportunities exist for reuse and repurposing. Alongside this assessment, recommendations are being developed for the sustainable management of the prototype tank after the project ends.

These activities support LH2CRAFT’s efforts to consider the future use and recovery of materials and equipment as part of the design process.
