Exploring Hydrogen Interfaces for Marine Propulsion

Task 5.3 – Assessment of Main Propulsion Unit Interface, led by the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), will investigate the application of hydrogen as a fuel for marine propulsion.

The scope of this work extends beyond hydrogen storage, encompassing an analysis of current trends in the use of both liquid and compressed gaseous hydrogen in Internal Combustion Engines (ICEs), Fuel Cells, and other eligible propulsion technologies. The investigation will explore the operational aspects and challenges of these systems, assess their interfaces with auxiliary equipment, and examine current maritime applications.

In addition, the task will consider alternative hydrogen carriers—such as Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carriers (LOHCs)—and evaluate their potential for implementation within the marine industry.

The work will be conducted in alignment with the technological readiness level (TRL) of each system and will rely on available literature and industry sources.

Task 5.3 is scheduled to run from month 28 (M28) to month 38 (M38), with its outcomes compiled in Deliverable D5.2 – Main Propulsion Unit Interface.
