LH2CRAFT and SAFeCRAFT Hold Joint Safety Workshop on Hydrogen-Based Maritime Systems

LH2CRAFT recently participated in a joint safety workshop with SAFeCRAFT, led by the University of Strathclyde, to support technical exchange and collaboration on the safe integration of hydrogen-based systems in maritime applications.

The workshop brought together partners from both EU-funded projects to discuss structured safety assessment approaches, with particular attention to Hazard and Operability Study and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis. These methodologies supported the systematic identification of potential hazards, operational deviations, failure modes, and mitigation measures associated with innovative onboard fuel systems.

For LH2CRAFT, the event represented an important opportunity to examine safety-critical areas linked to liquid hydrogen technologies and their integration into future vessel designs. Discussions covered key system areas such as bunkering arrangements, tank connection spaces, gas valve units, hydrogen burning areas, ventilation systems, and supporting safety infrastructure.

The collaboration with SAFeCRAFT highlighted the strong synergies between European initiatives addressing the safe deployment of alternative fuels in shipping. By sharing expertise, technical perspectives, and risk assessment approaches, the workshop contributed to the development of robust safety practices that can support the wider adoption of hydrogen and other sustainable fuels in the maritime sector. The University of Strathclyde’s leadership ensured a productive and well-structured exchange, helping partners focus on practical outcomes and common safety challenges. Through this joint activity, LH2CRAFT continues to reinforce its commitment to advancing safe, innovative, and sustainable solutions for the next generation of zero-emission vessels.
