LH₂CRAFT Research on Sustainable Insulation Material Selection Presented at MARTECH 2026

Research developed within the LH₂CRAFT project was presented by Thomas Kalampoukas from the University of Patras at the International Conference on Maritime Technology and Engineering – MARTECH 2026, supporting the dissemination of project results to the wider maritime research and engineering community.

The presentation, titled “A Design-Decision-Support Tool for Sustainable Insulation Material Selection in LNG and LH2 Membrane Tanks,” focused on the development of a design-decision-support approach for selecting insulation materials for cryogenic membrane tanks. The work was carried out by researchers from the University of Patras and HYDRUS Engineering S.A., and authored by Thomas Kalampoukas, Dionysios Markatos, Alexandros Giannakis, Astrinos Papadakis and Angelos Filippatos. Further details on the work can be found in the relevant publication:

The research addresses insulation material selection for LNG and liquid hydrogen membrane tanks, where thermal performance, safety, efficiency and sustainability are key considerations in the design of cryogenic containment systems. By supporting a more structured evaluation of material options, the work contributes to the technical knowledge being developed within LH₂CRAFT on advanced containment solutions for alternative marine fuels.

The presentation at MARTECH 2026 offered an opportunity to share project-related research outcomes with an international audience of maritime technology and engineering experts, contributing to LH₂CRAFT’s wider dissemination activities.
