The technical challenges of storing liquid hydrogen on board vessels were addressed through LH₂CRAFT research presented at the 8th International Conference on Maritime Technology and Engineering – MARTECH 2026.
The presentation, titled “Thermomechanical Assessment of a Preliminary Membrane-type Cargo Containment System Design for Liquid Hydrogen,” was delivered by T.I. Mavrozoumis from from the School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, Shipbuilding Technology Laboratory, at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). The work was authored by T.I. Mavrozoumis, G.D. Novas, E.P. Bilalis and N.G. Tsouvalis, from the School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, Shipbuilding Technology Laboratory, NTUA.

Unlike conventional marine fuel storage systems, liquid hydrogen containment requires careful consideration of cryogenic temperatures and the resulting structural response of the tank system. The presented research examined the thermomechanical behaviour of a preliminary membrane-type cargo containment system design, supporting the evaluation of its performance under demanding operating conditions.
This work contributes to LH₂CRAFT’s technical research on the development and assessment of containment solutions suitable for liquid hydrogen storage on board vessels. By focusing on the interaction between thermal effects and structural response, the study supports a better understanding of the design requirements associated with future hydrogen-based maritime applications.Further details on the work can be found in the relevant publication:
The presentation at MARTECH 2026 provided an opportunity to share this project-related research with an international audience of maritime technology, naval architecture and marine engineering experts.
