Safety by Design: LH2CRAFT Advances Qualitative Risk Assessment

Led by TWI, LH2CRAFT’s Task 8.3 – Qualitative Safety Evaluation for the Detailed System Design is integrating structured safety assessments into the engineering process to support the safe and reliable transport of liquid hydrogen at sea.

Project experts completed Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) studies for the demonstrator vessel design. Further studies examined a cargo containment system for a RoPax concept, alongside qualitative risk assessments for double-ended ferry and short-sea shipping bulk carrier applications. Additional vessel types will be assessed as the project progresses.

Through multidisciplinary workshops, the teams systematically examined how the liquid hydrogen storage system and its handling, distribution and monitoring subsystems could respond to process deviations or component failures. Using recognised methods and structured worksheets, they identified potential hazards, reviewed existing safeguards and defined opportunities for risk reduction.

The findings are feeding directly into the detailed designs developed across LH2CRAFT, helping project partners address safety considerations as the engineering work progresses. This iterative approach strengthens the connection between risk assessment and design development, supporting system reliability, operational readiness and safety.
