Preparing the Validation Strategy for the LH2CRAFT Prototype Tank

An important milestone in the LH2CRAFT project is the development of a comprehensive testing and inspection strategy for the prototype tank of the membrane-type liquid hydrogen cargo containment system (CCS).

Led by HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE), Task 6.5 is establishing a structured testing programme intended to assess the integrity, constructability, and operational characteristics of the prototype tank. The objective is to define a representative validation framework that will support the forthcoming fabrication and testing activities while ensuring alignment with project requirements and industry practices.

The planned testing programme includes verification of both the primary and secondary membrane barriers through non-destructive examinations, leak-tightness assessments, and global integrity evaluations. In addition, dedicated evaluations are being defined to assess the performance of the insulation spaces and to collect operational data that will support future system development and validation activities.

Particular attention is being given to the definition of practical testing sequences, inspection methodologies, and evaluation approaches that can be applied throughout the mock-up validation campaign. The testing procedures are being developed through close collaboration between engineering, manufacturing, testing, and classification specialists participating in the project.

The preliminary testing programme is expected to undergo review by the classification society as part of the project’s approval activities. Feedback obtained through this process will contribute to the refinement of the testing procedures before execution of the mock-up testing campaign.

Through this work, LH2CRAFT is laying the foundation for the future validation of membrane-type liquid hydrogen cargo containment technology and supporting the development of safe, efficient, and scalable solutions for large-scale maritime transportation of liquid hydrogen.
