Advancing Safety in Liquid Hydrogen Transport: Development of Guidelines for Cargo Containment Systems

As part of the LH2CRAFT project, Bureau Veritas is leading Task 8.5 – Development of Safety Assessment Guidelines and Recommendations for Cargo Containment System (CCS) Design and Integration. This important work focuses on creating comprehensive safety guidelines tailored to the unique challenges associated with storing and transporting large volumes of liquid hydrogen (LH₂) at sea.

These guidelines are being developed based on the Formal Safety Assessment (FSA) initiated by the University of Strathclyde, which forms the foundation of the project’s safety framework. Transporting liquid hydrogen introduces novel technologies, including new CCS designs, and presents specific risks due to its extremely low temperature, wide flammability and explosivity range, and low minimum ignition energy.

The FSA includes a risk analysis study, identification of operational hazards, and a quantitative risk analysis, all of which are currently ongoing and will continue until the end of 2025. The conclusions and recommendations derived from this work will provide a robust methodology and actionable safety guidelines for integrating CCS in hydrogen-fuelled vessels, contributing to the safe and sustainable deployment of LH₂ technologies in maritime transport.
