Task 3.2: Final Outputs on the Modularity and Scalability Concept for the Tank Storage System

Led by HD-KSOE, this task focuses on the modularity and scalability concept development of the membrane type cargo containment system for liquid hydrogen. The membrane type cargo containment system of liquid hydrogen is constructed in three layers, with the upper and lower insulation panels intersecting to create a complex heat transfer path. The insulation panels are repeatedly positioned in standard panels of the same size for ease of fabrication and installation, so that the size of the cargo containment system can be controlled by adjusting the number of insulation panels arranged in each direction.

The LH2 CCS is designed similarly to the shape of the ship’s hull structure to maximize cargo transportation efficiency, with sloped chamfers on the upper and lower sides to minimize sloshing loads caused by ship’s motions in waves. When sizing the cargo containment system, consideration should be given to the number of insulation panels to be placed in each direction and the size of the chamfers to minimize sloshing loads. Practical guides are developed to dimension the cargo tank size using these developed components of the insulation system.
